Julia's River Camp
Julia's River Camp
Tented camp on wooden platforms along the Talek River in Masai Mara Reserve. Three categories, safari-style restaurant, and open-plan concept.
Julia's River Camp, on the banks of the Talek River
Julia's River Camp is a tented camp situated on the banks of the Talek River, 8 km from Talek Gate, in the Keekorok region within Masai Mara Reserve. The camp operates on the principle of open-plan camping: no fences separate the tents from the surrounding savanna, and wildlife circulates freely around the property, particularly when coming to drink at the river.
Access is by road from Talek Gate, or by air via the Ol Kiombo airstrip, also 8 km away.
Why choose this camp
- Direct location on the Talek River, in the heart of the Keekorok zone
- Open-plan camping concept with wildlife, no perimeter fences
- Three tent categories to suit different budgets and space requirements
- Secluded VIP section in a woodland setting by the river, more private
- Central location for accessing the main safari sectors of the Mara
The atmosphere
The camp embraces classic Kenyan safari style: a large safari-style restaurant tent, evening campfire, and savanna sounds as your nightly soundtrack. The VIP section, set apart from the standard tents, occupies a woodland grove along the river that screens views and preserves privacy — an ideal choice for honeymooners or small groups seeking tranquility.
Energy operations rely on a combination of generators and solar panels, with tent lighting powered by solar energy.
The tents
Accommodation is organized into three categories spread across three distinct zones:
- Standard tents: standard configuration, along the river
- Superior tents: more spacious, convertible to triples
- VIP tents: located in the secluded wooded section, limited in number
All tents sit on elevated wooden platforms and feature a private veranda overlooking the river or woodland. Inside: beds with cotton linens and mosquito nets, sitting area, solar lighting, and bathrooms with hot water available.
Dining and services
The restaurant occupies a large central safari-style tent. Breakfast is included, and the full-board package offers an English or continental breakfast, lunch at camp or a packed lunch for safari outings, and a three-course dinner accompanied by South African wines. Chefs adapt menus to specific dietary requirements on request and prepare packed meals for daily excursions.
Practical services include: Wi-Fi, secure parking, laundry service, safes, luggage storage, shuttle service, and on-site security measures.
Activities offered
- 4x4 safaris across different areas of the Mara: spotting lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, hippopotamuses, and crocodiles
- Hot air balloon rides at sunrise over the savanna
- Guided walking tours with a ranger along reserve trails
- Horseback riding across the plains
- Bird watching, the reserve hosting abundant birdlife (ostriches, herons, storks, vultures, eagles)
- Visits to Masai villages in the surrounding areas
Between July and October, the camp has a front-row seat to the Great Migration: hundreds of thousands of herbivores move up from the Tanzanian Serengeti and cross the Mara River in search of grazing lands, creating the famous crossing scenes.
Location and access
The camp is situated in the Keekorok region, on the Talek River bank, 8 km from Talek Gate (one of the reserve's entrances). By car, simply follow signs from Talek Gate. For air arrivals, Ol Kiombo airstrip is the nearby aerodrome, also 8 km away.
