Samburu Sopa Lodge sits within Samburu National Park in northern Kenya, 21 km from Archer's Post. Its silhouette takes the form of a buffalo's head: the main buildings form the skull, while the bungalows arranged in a semicircle around the waterhole create the horns. The circular reception, topped with a thatched roof, is open-sided: the high ceiling allows air to flow and tempers equatorial heat without forced air conditioning. Orange, beige, and brown tones dominate, echoing the surrounding bush hues. Decoration draws from local community craftsmanship, with traditional objects and textiles integrated into the common spaces.

The cottages, scattered in an arc around the waterhole, are built from stone and crowned with thatch roofs. This arrangement allows animals to move between buildings, leaving visitors genuinely within wildlife territory rather than in a closed enclave.

The rooms

The lodge has 30 cottages, each divided into 2 bedrooms, totaling 60 units. Rooms are decorated in orange, beige, and brown tones, with materials and furnishings inspired by Samburu culture. Each unit features two queen-size beds, a desk or dresser, a bathroom with shower, and a stone veranda. Large windows and high ceilings create volume and light.

Two rooms near the reception are equipped for guests with reduced mobility. Dik-diks are frequently spotted near the rooms at various times of day.

Dining and services

Meals are served buffet-style or à la carte, depending on group size and preferences. The menu features African, European, and Indian dishes. During safari days, packed picnic lunches are prepared for field excursions. The lodge also organizes sundowner aperitifs and bush meals—meals served in the wilderness.

Services include a swimming pool, kids' club, television lounge, recreation room, souvenir shop, and Wi-Fi access. Birding outings and botanically-guided nature walks led by a naturalist can be arranged on-site.

Wildlife and birds to observe

Samburu Reserve shelters species found nowhere else in southern Kenya parks: Grevy's zebra, Somali ostrich, beisa oryx, alongside lions, leopards, and elephants. The region also concentrates dense birdlife, estimated at nearly 400 species, including the kestrel and mariqua sunbird (Marico Sunbird).

Location and access

The lodge sits 700 m from Samburu National Reserve, 27 km from Kalama Reserve, and 325 km from Nairobi. Two access options:

• By road from Nairobi via the Isiolo-Moyale route: expect a full day's drive depending on road conditions and traffic.
• By air from Wilson Airport to Oryx airstrip, approximately 50-minute flight, followed by a 10-minute transfer to the lodge.

The Ngare Mara and Archer's Post junctions also provide access to the site.
