History

Diani Beach stretches 15 km of white sand between the coastal town of Ukunda and the Indian Ocean shoreline, 30 km south of the port city of Mombasa. According to ethnologists, Kenya's East Coast sits in the birthplace of East African civilisation. While much remains to be uncovered about Diani Beach's history, archives show that humans began settling in the region as early as the 8th century AD.

Arab and Indian merchants gradually arrived in the 9th century and enriched Swahili cultures. During this period, the region became a major trading hub. The Portuguese subsequently dominated Kenya's coast in the 15th century, before handing over to Omani Arabs. By the 19th century, the British had conquered the region and established a protectorate.

As for tourism's arrival at Diani Beach, the resort's first hotel was established as a cottage in 1937: the Jadini Beach Hotel. Later came Trade Winds and Two Fishes.

Air

For international travellers, the closest airport to Diani Beach is Mombasa's Moi International Airport. It's about 50 km north of the beach resort. Upon leaving the terminal, you can take a taxi or shuttle to reach the beach.

Car

From Mombasa, take the A14 highway to reach Diani Beach.

Bus

Shuttles run regularly between Moi Airport and Diani Beach. If you're in Nairobi, you can take a bus for approximately six hours.

When to Visit?

Nature has blessed Diani Beach with splendid holiday weather. It's fantastic almost year-round. The best time to visit stretches from July to August, when temperatures hover around 27°C. From December to April, it's slightly warmer, averaging 31°C. Monsoon rains occur between April and May.
