Swahili oral tradition holds that the settlement was founded in the 9th century by Arab merchants. Mombasa occupied a strategic position on maritime trade routes in East Africa. Nature blesses Mombasa with high sunshine levels and pleasant temperatures year-round. On average, temperatures range between 28°C and 33°C. Water temperature rarely drops below 25°C.
