Stretching east of Mount Kenya, Kora National Park sits 260 km northeast of Nairobi. Like most of Kenya's national parks, safari takes center stage here. A diverse array of wildlife inhabits its territory of approximately 1,788 square kilometers. Yet this protected area in Tana River County offers far more than wildlife viewing. Visitors can also rock climb and fish for fish in the Tana River, among other activities.

The Park's Story

Kora National Park's history is inextricably linked to that of George Adamson. This conservation pioneer lived in the park (then a nature reserve) for nearly two decades. During this period, Adamson dedicated his life to protecting local wildlife, particularly lions.

His tragic death in 1989 marked a turning point in the park's history. Adamson's assassination by poachers sparked international awareness of the threat poaching poses to nature conservation. In response to this tragedy, the Kenyan government made the decision to designate Kora as a national park in 1990.

Since then, significant efforts have been implemented to protect and preserve the park's fauna and flora. Development programs have been launched to ensure long-term conservation of this vital ecosystem. This includes opening road networks to facilitate park access, the reconstruction of Kampi, and implementing measures to combat poaching.

What to Do in Kora National Park?

Safari

Kora National Park shares borders with Meru National Park and Tsavo National Park. Besides the Tana River, several seasonal watercourses flow through it as well. Due to its vast expanse, the protected area is an excellent location for safari.

During their exploration of the park, visitors can spot lions, wildcats, striped hyenas, servals, elephants, hippopotamuses, cheetahs, antelopes and much more. These animals can be observed in the trees, savanna grasslands, or among rocky outcrops. You'll also spot them along the banks of the Tana River, the park's primary water source.

Birdwatching

Safari is also an opportunity to discover the bird species that inhabit the park. Birds are not difficult to spot. Moreover, the region boasts more than 450 species.

Among the bird species vying for your binoculars are eagles, vultures, hornbills, herons, wild geese and parrots. Note that during your safari, you may also have the chance to encounter ostriches.

Rock Climbing

This activity is possible within the park. Climbers can conquer Kora Rock, a place of great historical significance, where George Adamson communicated with lions, who answered his call by roaring and sometimes gathered around the rock.

Fishing

The Tana River lends itself to fishing. Several local communities actually depend on this waterway for their livelihood. It encompasses a variety of forms: meanders, abandoned meanders, sandy floodplains, and more.

Guided walks along various trails are offered by Kora National Park. During their adventure, tourists enjoy rewarding views of the park's diverse fauna and flora, as well as its beautiful landscapes.

When to Visit?

The park is most pleasant to visit during the dry seasons, from June to September and from December to February. During these periods, roads are easier to navigate. Vegetation is also less dense, which facilitates wildlife observation.

By Car

280 kilometers of road separate Kora National Park from Nairobi. You can reach it using a four-wheel-drive vehicle.

By Plane

Access to the park is also possible by air. Several landing strips are located nearby, such as Kyethoni and Kampi Ya Simba.
