A Brief History of This Kenyan Gem

This reserve's story is deeply intertwined with Kenya's colonial era. Originally part of a vast estate owned by Lord Delamere, a British settler, the region served as cattle ranching land in the early 20th century. It wasn't until late in the century that the land was converted into a nature reserve focused on conservation and sustainable management.

In 2007, Soysambu Conservancy was officially established as a private wildlife sanctuary, with the aim of preserving the ecological integrity of the region and protecting its diverse flora and fauna. Since then, the reserve has actively participated in conservation efforts, including habitat restoration, anti-poaching patrols, and community awareness programs.

What Is the Size of Soysambu Conservancy?

Soysambu Conservancy majestically spans 48,000 acres (190 km²), covering an expanse roughly equivalent to half the city of Paris. It borders the Elmenteita badlands to the south, in the Mawe Mbili region, and shares a 12.1 km border to the west with Lake Nakuru National Park.

Home to over 450 bird species, Soysambu Conservancy is a true haven for ornithology enthusiasts. The reserve's waters attract a multitude of waterbirds, from Cape teals to yellow-billed storks and various herons.

How to Get There?

By Road

From Nairobi, take the A104 toward Nakuru. The reserve's main gate is located 30 km southeast of the city.

By Air

The reserve is accessible in approximately 30 minutes by flight from Nairobi. It has several airstrips, including Kasambara, situated just a short distance from the main gate.
