A Brief Overview

Turkana County belongs to the former Kenyan province of the Rift Valley. It nestles in the country's northernmost region, bordering Ethiopia, Uganda, and South Sudan. Turkana is part of the contested Ilemi Triangle territory. Bordered by Lake Turkana, it holds the second-largest county by area in the country.

A Word on Its History

Turkana, and especially the area near its lake, records four archaeological sites dating from the Stone Age. Evidence found at these locations demonstrates the existence of early humans in this part of East Africa.

Turkana: People of the Grey Ox

Following the arrival of the British on Kenyan soil, the entire territory was pacified. At that time, it was very difficult to move freely. Inhabitants were forced to remain in Turkana. Around the middle of the 20th century, the county boasted a significant population, who became known as the Turkana people.

When to Visit?

Due to its location in the desert, Turkana experiences a desert-like climate. The sun is ever-present year-round, often quite intense. High temperatures are felt even at night. In the depths of winter, it's not uncommon to see single-digit temperatures on the thermometer. Most regions receive virtually no rainfall throughout the year.

The best time to visit this northern part of Kenya is from June to August and during the final two months of the year.

By Car

A drive along the desert will certainly add spice to your adventure. Indeed, it takes many long hours—even days—to reach Turkana from Nairobi. These numerous kilometers allow you to travel from hamlet to hamlet, making stops at Maralal, Samburu, and Marsabit. Your journey will be punctuated by views of nomadic encampments and camel herds moving through the desert.

By Bus

The most popular mode of transport to Turkana, the bus allows you to mingle with this very welcoming people. Note that the bus departs from Nairobi and travel time depends on road conditions.

By Plane

Less recommended if you want to fully experience your adventure in this African desert. However, chartering a plane becomes essential if you want to reach the far northern reaches. Departing from the Kenyan capital, this mode of transport allows you to admire beautiful views of Lake Turkana and the Suguta Valley.

Turkana is situated in a desert environment. To get around, you can use a rental car, walk on foot, or travel by boat.

Rent a Car

To explore Turkana, tourists naturally use the same vehicle they rented to reach Turkana. The most common are 4x4 off-road vehicles that won't easily get bogged down in the sand.

Walk on Foot

Walking allows you to soak up the atmosphere of the desert. The Turkana themselves move on foot between villages or while herding their livestock.
