Heading to Kenya soon? It's time to think about your luggage. While sunglasses, a camera, and sunscreen naturally come to mind, there are essential items often overlooked—waterproof bags, hidden pouches, and more. Here's how to pack the perfect suitcase for your Kenyan vacation.
What to Bring on a Safari in Kenya?
Kenya is first and foremost a land of adventure and safari. A safari in the Masai Mara Reserve is a must-do experience.
For a safari in Kenya, here's what we recommend packing:
- Light short-sleeved and long-sleeved t-shirts
- A shirt or vest with pockets to keep essentials within reach (smartphone, memory cards, etc.).
- A lightweight zip-up jacket or sweatshirt to stay warm as temperatures drop in the evening.
- For the lower half, wear lightweight hiking pants to explore the Great Rift Valley's forests and bermudas or shorts for savanna circuits.
- A pair of well-fitting shoes with good soles, properly broken in before your trip.
You'll also need a backpack for your belongings. Opt for soft, easy-to-handle models, as they'll be secured to the 4x4 during outings. Get a plastic cover or pouch to protect your electronics and documents from dust and humidity.
Consider adding a pair of binoculars to your pack for observing wildlife from a distance during your excursions. Of course, you'll want a camera to capture wildlife scenes and landscapes.
What to Bring for a Beach Stay in Kenya?
In a country with over 500 km of coastline to explore, a swimsuit is essential! You can pack a swim cap to protect your hair while swimming. However, if you plan to explore the depths of Watamu Marine National Park, you'll need a wetsuit. For your sunbathing moments at Diani Beach south of Mombasa, make sure you have a towel, plenty of sunscreen, a hat or cap, and sunglasses. Given the coastal climate, bring a waterproof jacket to cover yourself in case of rain.
What to Bring for Visiting Kenyan Cities?
No particular dress code is needed to explore Kenyan cities. Stick with light, understated, and comfortable outfits.
For outings, we recommend wearing a small waist pouch placed under your clothing, where you can store your money and documents. This type of pouch is very practical for travel and allows you to carry your essentials safely.
For late afternoon or evening outings, remember to pack a jacket—nights can sometimes be cool.
Essentials for Your First Aid Kit
A first aid kit is essential to have in your suitcase when traveling to Kenya. It should contain:
- SPF 50 sunscreen
- Paracetamol
- Anti-diarrheal medication
- Disinfectant spray and bandages + gauze and medical tape
- Saline solution
- Insect repellent
- Condoms and/or contraception
What Else to Pack for a Trip to Kenya?
Other small items, equally essential for your trip, should not be forgotten:
- Camera + memory card + battery and charger
- Small travel journal to write down all your memories
- Power adapter
- Power bank
- Flashlight
- Pair of binoculars
- Photocopies of all your important documents
Have a wonderful trip to Kenya!
